Department of Therapy, Obstetrics and Surgery

The history of the department begins in 1931 and is associated with the organization of a new Veterinary and Zootechnical Institute in the city of Ganja on the basis of the department of animal husbandry at the agricultural faculty of the Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute. The name of the department has repeatedly changed based on the subjects taught at the department. In 1933, the Department of Surgery was organized, in the creation of which A.G.Alizade, V.M.Olivkov, I.M.Shamkhalov participated. In 1934, as an independent department, the department began to function under the name "Non-communicable diseases and clinical diagnostics". From 1937 to 1953 The Department of Surgery was headed by Associate Professor A.G.Kadymov. in 1939, the department became known as the Department of Operational Surgery, in 1946 the Department of Pathology and Therapy, in 1950 the Department of Surgery and Obstetrics, in 1964 the Department of Surgery and Obstetrics, and etc. In 1951, due to structural changes, a new department of "Surgery" was created at the faculty (head professor Mobil Hasanov), in 1960 an independent department of obstetrics (head of the assistant professor Chingiz Rzayev) was organized.

In 1979-1988 the department was called as the department of "Non-communicable diseases and clinical diagnostics", and after 1988 - as the department of "Therapy, clinical diagnosis and obstetrics". Then, the department became known as the Department of Anatomy, Pharmacology, Therapy and Obstetrics, and since 2009, the Department of Non-infectious Diseases. Since 2018, the department has been named "Therapy, Obstetrics and Surgery".

The first head of the Department of Noncommunicable Diseases and Clinical Diagnostics was Professor Ya. Yu. Babaev. In 1937, the department was divided into two independent departments headed by young scientists K.K. Movsumzade (Clinical Diagnostics and M.A. Mehdiyev (“Therapy”). In those years, famous scientists I.N.Gvatua, V.M. Bitsky, N.M. Preobrazhensky, I.M. G.M. Hajiyev, who later became the author of valuable textbooks on clinical diagnosis and non-communicable diseases in the Azerbaijani language.

During the Second World War (1941-1945) and in 1945-1947 the department was accordingly led by associate professors V.V. Spassky and F.F. Porokhov. Since 1947 management of these department was again entrusted to M.A. Mehdiyev and K.K. Movsumzade. In 1950-1962 the department was headed by Professor M.A. Mehdiyev, and in 1962-1978. and 1984-1987 Professor G.M.Gadzhiev. In 1978-1984 Associate Professor A.M. Alizade headed the department, and in 1988-1997 - Associate Professor N.A. Aliyev. In 1997-2008 the department was headed by associate professor S.M. Tagiyev, in 2009-2011 - associate professor R.N. Allahverdiyev, in 2011-2014. Professor F.N.Nasibov, and in 2014-2018. - Professor A.A. Tagiyev.

In 2018, after structural changes, the Department of Therapy, Obstetrics and Surgery was again organized and its leadership was entrusted to Professor F.N.Nasibov.

Since 2020, the department has been headed by Associate Professor I.F. Ganjaev.

A considerable merit in the students' assimilation of knowledge in such disciplines as non infectious diseases, clinical diagnostics, and organization of veterinary medicine belongs to the associate professors and teachers Haji Dilbazi, Ali Alizade, Farrukh Aliyev, Nagi Aliyev, Alekper Aliyev, Hikmet Efendiev, Rashid who worked at the time Bilal Safarov, Gamza Mammadov.

Prominent scientists worked at the department in different years. The first head of the department “Non-infectious diseases and clinical diagnostics” Yagub Babayev in 1937 published a valuable monograph “Changing the blood composition of horses with many purulent processes”, and he is the author of over 150 scientific papers.

Professor Mekhtiyev Mammad Asad oglu, who headed the Department of Pathology and Therapy in 1946, compiled the first textbook on therapy in the Azerbaijani language, he published over 150 scientific papers. He worked for several years as the rector of the Azerbaijan Agricultural Institute. Professor Movsumzade Kadyr Kurbanovich who worked in 1947 as the head of the Department of Clinical Diagnostics studied the functional activity of the kidneys in horses and cattle. His monograph on the topic “The Use of Protein Hydrolysates in Veterinary Medicine” was awarded the State Prize in 1989. He published 5 monographs, textbooks, and over 160 scientific papers. Professor Haji Mammadbagir oglu Hajiyev, for a long time the head of the Department of Clinical Diagnostics and Therapy, was the author of the first textbooks on clinical diagnosis and internal non-infectious animal diseases in the national language.

Along with the preparation of bachelor candidates, the department is preparing masters in three specializations of veterinary medicine ("Internal Noncommunicable Diseases", "Veterinary Obstetrics, Gynecology, Artificial Insemination", "Veterinary Surgery".

For practical classes, the audiences and laboratories of the department are equipped with modern equipment, special instruments, apparatus, a veterinary clinic, a livestock farm, a vivarium equipped with modern diagnostic equipment and instruments, a specialized laboratory, a special operating room equipped with appropriate surgical equipment, instruments and instruments, an X-ray room, ultrasound machine, center for artificial insemination of animals, a specialized laboratory at the educational-experimental farm of the university for medical examination of animals, etc.

Scientific directions of the department
- study of the etiology, diagnosis, therapy and prevention of non-communicable animal diseases in an intensified livestock industry on an industrial basis;
- research, improvement and application of new methods and means of diagnosing non-communicable diseases, the study of endemic diseases;
-development of effective methods and means (premixes, biologically active substances, vitamin and mineral feed additives, etc.) for the treatment and prevention of metabolic pathologies and other disorders in the body;
-development of effective methods of prevention and therapy on a large scale for digestive disorders and diseases of the gastrointestinal system;
-search and development of new effective anti-stress drugs, biostimulants and other means to increase the nonspecific resistance of the body;
- study of the influence of naphthalan oil and its fractions on the functions of various organs and systems of the body and identifying the possibilities of their use in pathologies
- the study of the metabolism of buffaloes under normal conditions and various pathologies and the development of effective therapeutic and preventive measures in order to obtain environmentally friendly products.

The department consists of 11 teachers and 4 laboratory assistants. One of them is a doctor of sciences, professor (F.N. Nasibov), two - doctors of philosophy, associate professors (I.F. Safarova, L. E. Verdiev, I. A. Guliyev), four assistants (G. R. Khalilova, I. B. Shirinova., A. A. Mamedova, N. T. Kurbanova).
