In 2009, by the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the training of specialists in "Pharmacy" was started at department of "Pharmacy and Morphology” in ASAU (Azerbaijan State Agricultural University) under the supervision of A.A. Aliyev (associate professor) as head of department. In 2011, the department was renamed to the department of “Pharmacy”. In 2014, the department of "Pharmacy" was merged with another department and continued its activities until September 2021 under the name of "Department of Pharmacy and Veterinary Sanitary Examination" (head of the department, Professor M.M. Aliyev). In September 2021, the department of "Pharmacy and Veterinary-Sanitary Examination" was restructured, and the Department of “Pharmacy”, which teaches various specialties just to the students of pharmacy, began to operate independently.
Admission to both bachelor and master degrees is carried out by State Examination Center of Azerbaijan. The curriculum of this specialty (Pharmacy) is fully in line with the curriculum of the Azerbaijan Medical University. The department has enough lecture, laboratory, and seminar rooms to teach specialty subjects (pharmacognosy, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutical technology, organization of pharmaceutical work, toxicological chemistry, etc.). They are highly equipped and used in the teaching process. The laboratories are equipped with modern equipment, devices and chemical reagents. Thus, atomic-absorption spectrophotometer, polarimeters, refractometers, microscopes, a large number of different devices, reagents, medicines, relevant tools and equipment (pharmacy scales, containers, apparatus, etc.) were taken and given to the department for teaching pharmaceutical subjects as well as conducting research. In 2021, by the initiative and direct organization of the rector of ASAU, the "Pharmaceutical Innovation Center" was established and started operating in the department in a modern way. Lots of textbooks were provided to the fundamental library of ASAU, faculty library, and “Pharmaceutical Innovation Center”. Most of them are published by scientists of the Azerbaijan Medical University in recent years. At the same time, the department has some books on pharmacy in Russian, Turkish, and English. The department has a Student Scientific Society and scientific associations working under its supervision.
The existing educational programs in all subjects are scientifically substantiated and improve with methodologically expedient forms. Sufficient textbooks and teaching books are used to teach the subjects taught. The teaching process in all disciplines at the department is conducted by qualified specialists in two languages Azerbaijani and Russian. Teachers and students were regularly sent to Azerbaijan Medical University for promotion.
The department of Pharmacy teaches more than 30 subjects at the bachelor and master degrees in Azerbaijani and Russian languages in different specialties: "Pharmaceutical Technology", "Pharmaceutical Chemistry", "Pharmacognosy", "Organization of Pharmaceutical Work", "Physio-chemical composition of drugs" methods of analysis”, “Pharmacology ”, “History and deontology of pharmacy”, “Toxicological chemistry”, “Clinical pharmacology”, “Hospital pharmacy”, “Medical and pharmaceutical commodity science”, “Phytotherapy”, “Modern problems of the specialty”, “Supply, processing and quality control of medicinal plant raw materials”, “History and methodology of the specialty”, “Pharmacognosy of plant medicinal raw materials”, “Pharmacognosy of medicinal raw materials of animal and mineral origin”, “Food natural biological additives”, “Anti-parasitic medicinal plants”, “ Supply, processing and quality control of plant medicinal raw materials”, etc.
On some subjects (pharmacology, toxicological chemistry), laboratory classes are conducted experimentally on animals. Also, in laboratory classes on pharmacognosy, medicinal plants and herbal raw materials, which are supplied by the staff of the department, are used.
Currently, the department of pharmacy is headed by Associate Professor Mahruh Nagiyeva Mahmud. In 2005, she defended her dissertation on "Application of complex formation properties of some azo compounds in the titrimetric determination of drugs containing sulfhydryl group" on the specialty "15.00.02 - Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacognosy". She was awarded the title of Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmacy. She is the author of several textbooks and scientific works.
The teaching staff of the department consists of 3 associate professors, 1 doctor of philosophy in medicine, 4 senior teachers and 10 assistants. In particular, there is 1 senior laboratory assistant, 3 laboratory assistants and 1 preparator.
Associate professors Akif Aliyev and Sakit Atakishiyev, senior lecturer Aybaniz Abdinova are the authors of several curricula, textbooks, methodical instructions, dozens of scientific works and teach several pharmaceutical subjects at the bachelor and master levels.
In recent years, the department has a large number of promising young teachers who have completed their master degree in pharmacy, medicine and chemistry (N.A.Tagiyeva, Sh.B.Jafarova, K.A.Huseynova, Sh.J.Jafarova, E.A.Yolchuyeva, I.B.Shirinova, L.X.Asadova , E.P.Orujov, A.F.Asgarli, F.A.Rahimli, G.A.Abdullazade). Beside teaching pharmacy at the required level, they continue their doctoral studies in the field of pharmacy.
At the same time, the graduates of the department pass the entrance exams successfully and continue their education at the master level in pharmacy at ASAU, Azerbaijan Medical University, Turkey, and Russia.
In the last 10-15 years, employees of the department have participated in dozens of international scientific conferences, symposiums, congresses, and international scientific projects (Associate Professor A.A.Aliyev - Mevlana - Mevlana Exchange Program, Turkey-2017; Senior Lecturer N.A.Tagiyeva - Mevlana-Mevlana Exchange Program, Turkey-2018; N.A.Tagiyeva, Slovenia-2019).
