Department of Epizootology, Microbiology, and Parasitology

The Department of Microbiology was established in 1932 at the Veterinary and Zootechnical Institute, organized in 1931 in Ganja on the basis of the livestock department at the Agricultural Faculty of the Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute. At the initial stage, the teaching was conducted by Professor S.I. Drachinsky, N.V. Strizhevsky. In 1932, the Veterinary and Zootechnical Institute was annexed to the Azerbaijan Agricultural Institute. Somewhat later, at the initiative of S.I. Drachinsky, N.V. Strizhevsky and M.K. Ganiev it became the Department of Microbiology and Epizootology. At different times, the department was headed by professors S.I. Drachinsky, A.A. Bogdanovsky, M.K. For many years, the department was referred to as the department of "Microbiology, Epizootology and Virology". In 1991, it became known as the Department of Epizootology, Microbiology and Pathanatomy, and since 2000, the Department of Epizootology, Microbiology and Parasitology.

As a result of the research work, the dynamics of the spread of brucellosis was studied, the factors affecting this process were identified, a system of measures to combat this infection was developed, which contributed to the implementation of anti-brucellosis health measures in livestock farms.

Honored Scientist, Academician M.G. Ganiev, who made a significant contribution to the development of veterinary science and practice, created his own scientific school of microbiologists. In 1950, for the first time in Azerbaijan, a textbook on veterinary microbiology was published in his native language.

The head of the department for many years, Professor K.M. Safarov, along with the training of highly qualified veterinary specialists, conducted valuable scientific research to study the problems of leptospirosis in small cattle. During the leadership of the department, Professor Yu.B.Safarov conducted basic research on the study of anaerobic infections of sheep and the development and implementation of measures to combat them in farms, created his own scientific school, and under his leadership several dissertations were completed. He authored a number of textbooks, study guides, and monographs. For many years, the department was headed by Honored Worker of Science, Professor R. A. Kadymov, the results of whose multilateral research activities were of great scientific and practical importance. He developed and applied in the farms of the republic the method of complex and associated vaccination of sheep against infectious diseases of sheep, for which he received several copyright certificates. Under his leadership, over 20 candidate and several doctoral dissertations were completed. He has published several valuable textbooks on microbiology and epizootology.

Currently, the department is conducting research work on the topic "Prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the most common diseases of farm animals and birds, bees and fish in the Azerbaijan Republic. Currently there are 15 employees of the faculty of the department, including five associate professors (Z.A. Aleskerov, G.E. Dunyamaliev - professor of ADAU, F.A. Mustafayev, M.R. Musaev, V.V. Sardarly), six senior teachers (Sh.V. Veliev- assistant professor of ADAU, S.N. Novruzova, K.I. Dunyamalieva, R.T. Mamedov, S.G. Huseynova, Sh.K. Zeynalova) and four assistants (R.Z. Huseynova, N.Z. Aleskerova, G.A. Verdiev, R.T. Farmanly) apply their knowledge and abilities. the training of highly qualified personnel for the agricultural sector of the republic.

Since 2000, the department has been headed by associate professor Z.A. Aleskerov. The main direction of his research work is the improvement of the complex of veterinary and sanitary measures to prevent sheep salmonellosis. He was the head of the scientific project “The Study of Animal Brucellosis”, conducted since 2011 by the ADAU in cooperation with the Norwegian University of Natural Sciences. Associate Professor Z.A. Aleskerov participated and made presentations on topical problems of veterinary science at international scientific congresses, symposiums, conferences and seminars held in foreign countries (Turkey, France, Norway, Russia, Ukraine, Georgia), including110 scientific works, including 4 textbooks, 2 study guides, 2 monographs, scientific recommendations, guidelines, training programs. The staff of the department has published more than 800 scientific papers, including over 70 textbooks, teaching aids and monographs. Several doctoral and master's theses were completed at the department, up to ten copyright certificates were obtained, and many recommendations for livestock farms were developed.

The department maintains close scientific ties with Istanbul University, Moscow Veterinary Academy, Georgian State Agrarian University, Kavkaz University "Caucasus", Ataturk University of Erzurum, Norwegian University of Natural Sciences.

Since 1978, the department has had a specialized problem laboratory for the study of sheep infectious diseases. The research laboratory conducts research on the study of epizootology, etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and development of effective measures to combat the most common infections in sheep farms (salmonellosis, anaerobic infections, pasteurellosis, agalactia, mastitis). The department has laboratories of microbiology, virology, immunology, epizootology and parasitology equipped with modern equipment, which are used for educational and scientific purposes. The department has a special laboratory, consisting of 12 computer kits, which is used for students and specialists to master the rules and skills of working with the national-veterinary system "AzVET".
